This five-day course builds on the skills and knowledge of trim and cut felled trees course to teach students how to safely fall small trees. The courses teaches students how to fall trees where hazards are assessed as high to extreme. This is any tree that the faller is confident could be fallen safely. The course provides students with a larger tool box of skills to use when falling trees, including:
- Different scarfing methods and when they should be used
- Falling Safety
- Identifying direction of lean
- Identifying hazards
- Hung up trees
- Using Wedges to assist tree felling
- Falling trees bigger than the diameter of your bar
- Falling trees with a directional lean (minor)
- Falling trees with a side lean
- Falling dead or hollow trees
- Using multiple wedges
- Using multiple backcuts
- Large dead and/or hollow trees with significant defects
- Double leader trees
- Fire affected trees
- Limited access trees
- Large tree cross cutting in steep terrain

5 days depending on student experience
Prerequisites
Fall Trees Manually (Intermediate) or at least a substantial understanding of the dangers and skills required in problem tree felling.
Class Size
A maximum of 6 students per class
Specific Course Requirements
All equipment provided including chainsaws, PPE. If students have their own equipment and chainsaws they are encouraged to bring it along so that they can become familiar on equipment they will use regularly.
If the course is to be held outside of our Canberra location access to suitable trees that have either fallen or that can be felled is required.
Assessment
Competency is assessed by a theory examination and practical assessment
Course Award
At the completion of the course students will be issued with a Statement of Attainment and pocket sized laminated ticket that details the competencies they have been awarded with.
Frequency
The industry for chainsaw certification is that students should be reassessed for competency every three years. At the end of three years students will be required to attend a one day reassessment.
